My "do good" t-shirt and the "STOP WAR" stop sign I pass every day on my way to school are so akin. The "Yes, live well; be safe and happy" messages glow on this Career Day as I'm wearing the "Proudly, I teach!" pin Mom lent me during my first year of teaching and am dressed as myself with the option to wear a hat, tennis shoes that don't match the rest of my outfit, and jeans on a non-Friday.
The predawn light on the crooked sign, as I approached this morning, is a metaphor of the patience with which you must wait for the arrival of your calling and, in so many ways, of yourself.
Then, as Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down the Dream" plays as I drive into school, I smile at the thought of Jon's parody of the song coming through the wall this morning... "wa / ter / down / the drain..." and "sham / pooing / my hair...".
