Thursday, 5/24: It's 11:21 p.m., and every few hours this evening, including less than a minute ago, I remembered, "Oh, yeah, it's Friday, and I need to Slice... It's the last slice, too, so it should be good. I don't really want it to be half-thought-out like if I waited to write it in the morning...". So, tonight, I graded all the work that was turned in while I was in the department work day on Thursday, which included five Lit Circle packets, and one or two assignments from each of the fifty-four tenth graders reading "Julius Caesar". And, now, after washing my face and brushing my teeth and swooshing ACT around in my mouth, I'm slicing, what may be the last slice of the school year.
Friday, 5/25, 6:13 a.m.: Again at the bathroom sink, toothbrush on its way out of the cabinet, and the shower already running, I think, "Oh, yeah, slice!" and I start to write in my head, "Try to be yourself - confidently; sometimes we love ourselves less that other people love us. Sometimes we feel self-doubt about the things that make us most marvelous and beautiful, like those pansies in the Disney Alice in Wonderland.
Somehow it's already Memorial Day weekend of 2012. You are four school days - counting today - from being juniors in high school. So be responsible and care-free. Life is like the Feast of Lupercal in "Caesar"; sometimes you're the one running around, being a boss, and other times you're the one getting hit with goat hide... What I've learned, though, is that, even if you don't know it when it's happening, you'll be better off for experiencing those ups and downs of life, than having it all be cupcakes, puppies, movie days in class, A+s on tests, etc. Let life happen, but be the most active, genuine-you you can.
