As I walked across campus this morning, having parked my car in another attempt at a 'close' parking lot, I was soon in the midst of a surprising volume of heavy-machinery construction, which overwhelmed the thorough-fares surrounding RB. Unofficially closed sidewalks with 40" diameter pipes criss-crossing the cement like pick-up-sticks; streets obliterated, resembling Civil War trenches; building facades nearly completed, but the intentional chaos in the outside signaling "We're Closed"; the in-progress improvements being made to campus, while currently obvious and promising, will be the rebar supporting the new experiences of the academic year come the third week of August. And so is the construction in the Tech AI... Here are links to the AI participants' blogs: Becky, Gail, and Casey. Upon entering the lab and realizing I was not ten minutes early for a 9AM start, but actually twenty minutes late for a 8:30AM start, I imagined a piece of fiction about the escapades one could have in the studio-apartment-sized caverns workers have excavated and are 'playing' in around the north sections of campus. Beep-beep-beep. "Back to work...". After starting the morning by composing reflections of Day 1 on our blogs and posting comments to each other, John Keller's article, "Studies Explore Whether the Internet Makes Students Better Writers" was discussed. The consensus from the group was "If you're gonna write, write well" whether the genre is a friend's Facebook wall or a formal piece for an academic audience; this expectation may not be reflected in students' natural instinct when "code switching" between their social and school lives. Continuing today's efforts to renovate communication between and beyond our classroom, our students, and their home fore(wo)men, both Gail and Becky were very enthused about the prospect and process of creating a website for their classes using Weebly. Prior to lunch in the Atrium and during the afternoon workshop time, Gail constructed on a site for her elementary school class(http://myfifthgrade.weebly.com/) , and Becky built a website for her sixth, seventh, and eighth grade English classes(http://mrstsenglish.weebly.com/) . Casey also shared a brief video that presented "Wikis in Plain English". |
