Like the epic, irreplaceable music of Queen, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles, or the individual perfect songs of Tom Petty, Cake, Sublime, and Radiohead, I hear a familiar energy and intensity of purpose in the handful of pristine 70's era songs from the Talking Heads that I've sung along with on short and long drives this summer. These "sweet spot" songs get it right. Having now heard them, I can't imagine music without these upbeat, complex, diverse songs that you can't help but sing along with unabashedly or at least nod your head confidently as you sit at a stop light listening.
In addition to "Pyscho Killer" (linked above), some of the fun, distinct Talking Heads songs I've enjoyed this summer include: "Take Me to the River"; "Uh Oh, Love Comes to Town," which has a guitar and bass opening (0:06-0:15) that I like to imagine The Muppets' band playing; "This Must be the Place"; "And She Was"; and, "Once in a Lifetime," which is featured in the trailer for Pixar's upcoming Wreck It Ralph.
Considering this band was at its prime years before I was born, I've again been reminded that music, books, and movies are some of the neat niches in life that allow you to discover just the right comfort, distraction, or treat at your own pace just when it's best for you.
