The photo above is an important one because of what it made me see and acknowledge about life: this snapshot taught me how to smile. The picture was taken during homecoming of my junior year in high school and, as you can see, Olivia, my friend in Photography class, and I were posing for a picture. Despite my Goodwill “spirit day” outfit of red polyester pants and a vest covered in dime-sized black sequins, and the hoopla fun of homecoming, I was happy, but “my face didn’t surely show it” - you know "If you're happy and you know, than you're face will surely show it"? When Olivia got the pictures developed she asked, “Why aren’t you happy here?” as she pointed to my face in the 4"x6” photo. “I am happy,” I said. But, Olivia clarified, “Then why aren’t you smiling?”
And, just like that, I saw what she saw. There, staring back at me, was a blank face that could’ve been listening to a lecture in Chemistry class, rather than the contented, carefree grin of someone with a sparkle of joie de vivre in my eye. So this ten-year-old photo is a reminder in the filing cabinet of my mind to be happy inside and out. Being indifferent about the peaceful moments of life is too close to being unappreciative to me, so I now see: smiling is ownership of your happiness.
